Hona Africa’s Short Film #50Africans1Question

What would you tell your 15-year-old self?

This is the question that was posed to visitors to the recent Africa Summer Festival at Covent Garden. The event is attended by Londoners of all backgrounds coming together to savour the tastes, sights and sounds of Africa.

Hosted annually by the cultural organisation The Africa Centre (which also showcased an exhibition exploring cultural identity through African contemporary photography on the day) the Africa Summer festival was a day of workshop activities, fashion shows, cutting edge music, exquisite food and general merriment.

The event gets bigger and better every year, with musicians Asa (one of our favourite acts in the contemporary African music genre) and Fuse ODG gracing the stage this time, and designers creatives and artists from every discipline displaying their skills.

Hona Africa the company that produced the film is the brainchild of Lawrie Zidyana, who originally set out to just blog about work by African filmmakers. That idea was overcome by a desire to make his own productions. Check out their site here.

The Hona Africa documentary was filmed targetted at Diasporan Africans and, whether deliberately or not, gained an interesting though light-hearted insight into the things that must play a key role in our development that we’d wish to warn or encourage themselves about so as to make life easier for ourselves. The responses, which were filmed in one take to preserve spontaneity, ranged from natural hair grooming to education advice and how best to have fun.

So…what would you tell YOUR 15-year old self? Hona Africa would like to know. Post your video responses on Instagram with #50Africand1Question or tag @honaafrica.
